Specific learning disorder assessments for adults & children

If you or your child find reading, writing, spelling or mathematics more difficult than expected, there may be an underlying Specific Learning Disorder (SpLD).

With specialised research training from the Oxford University Dyslexia Research Centre, Gill brings additional expertise in the assessment of Specific Learning Difficulties.

Specific Learning Disorders can affect:

  • Reading, spelling and word recognition (Dyslexia)
  • Written expression, handwriting and spelling (Dysgraphia)
  • Mathematics, number concepts and calculations (Dyscalculia)

Signs you may recognise

These vary widely from person to person. You don't need to recognise every one of them - if several feel familiar, it's worth getting in touch.

  • Letters appear to jiggle or move
  • Reading is slow, effortful or inaccurate
  • Persistent spelling difficulties
  • Difficulty expressing ideas in writing
  • Challenges with maths concepts or calculations
  • Falling behind academically despite strong effort
  • Frustration, low confidence or school-related anxiety

What is a Specific Learning Disorder?

Specific Learning Disorders (SpLD's) are neurodevelopmental conditions that affect how the brain processes certain types of information.

They are not related to intelligence, motivation or effort, and many highly capable individuals have learning differences that simply require the right support and understanding.

What does the assessment involve?

Assessments are tailored to the individual and typically include:

  • Clinical and developmental history
  • Cognitive (IQ) assessment
  • Academic achievement testing
  • Assessment of reading, writing and mathematics skills
  • Review of relevant reports and educational information

What will I receive at the end

You will receive a comprehensive report outlining:

  • Assessment findings
  • Diagnostic conclusions (where appropriate)
  • Learning strengths and challenges
  • Recommendations for school, university or workplace supports
  • Guidance regarding accommodations and adjustments

How the process works

Assessment takes place across several appointments and includes a consultation, rating scales, direct assessment sessions and a feedback meeting. A written report is delivered within six weeks. See our full step by step guide here
