Dr Gill SH Walker - Clinical PsychologistPsychotherapist & Supervisor

Welcome to INPSYGHT

Your story matters, not just what’s happening now, but how your experiences, relationships, roles, losses and transitions have shaped the way you think, feel and respond.

Before you decide whether I am the right psychologist to hear that story, you may want to know a little about who I am and how I work. My aim is to help you make sense of your experience, understand the patterns that have developed over time, and find new - ways of responding that feel practical, compassionate and possible.

About me

Hi I’m Gill. Originally from the UK, I lived as an ex-pat in Germany, Holland, Belgium and prior to settling in Australia. These experiences have given me a personal understanding of transition, change, and building a life in a new place as a child and an adult.

Outside of my work, I’m a wife, and mum to teenagers. I enjoy figurative sculpting as a creative outlet, something that keeps me connected to the importance of focus, form, patience and perspective in everyday life.

Professional experience

I have been offering doctorate-level psychological care for over 25 years, across Educational, Occupational, Forensic and Clinical Psychology, in the UK and Australia. I believe effective support comes from both professional expertise and support that feels human, relatable, and focused on what will actually help you move forward.

My therapeutic approaches include Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), stress management, resilience training, relational psychotherapies, skills training (specifically DBT), and motivational interviewing.

My philosophy as a practitioner

Approach, mindset & experience

Approach

My approach as a clinical psychologist is gentle, collaborative, and responsive to your individual style. I believe in working with who you are, and I encourage you to tell me openly if something doesn’t feel right for you. You are the expert on your own life and experiences; my role is to bring psychological knowledge, tools, and evidence-based strategies to support you. Alongside this gentleness, I am also pragmatic. People often seek therapy for clarity and feedback, so I aim to be thoughtful yet concise, offering clear reflections and practical insights when helpful.

Working together

At times, there are moments when you need space to discover your own answers. Equally, I can help identify options when things feel stuck or when patterns are difficult to see from within. I view my role as supporting meaningful change - you have invited me to explore challenges with you, and I walk alongside you as you navigate them. This includes providing resources, guidance, and a steady presence while you build confidence and capacity to move forward independently.

Our work together may involve exploring past experiences or focusing on present-day strategies depending on what best supports your goals. You guide the process through your needs, preferences, and lived experience, while I draw on a range of evidence-based therapeutic approaches to help map a way forward. Through careful listening and attunement to your personal style, therapy aims to strengthen your trust in your own perspective and support you in becoming more fully yourself.

Mindset

My mindset is calm, respectful, and non-judgemental. Modern life is fast-paced and often performance-driven and many people feel pressure to meet expectations that don’t always align with their values. Therapy can provide space to step back from these pressures and consider what truly matters to you. I believe everyone is entitled to feel comfortable in who they are and to cultivate a sense of contentment and wellbeing.

Practical wellbeing tools

Where appropriate, I integrate practical strategies that support emotional resilience and life satisfaction. These may draw on positive psychology, mindfulness, and wellbeing research, including approaches such as gratitude, savouring, and reflective practices. The aim is to help you develop tools you can use in everyday life, supporting sustainable change beyond the therapy space.

Assessments & reports

I offer psychological, cognitive, psychometric assessment (IQ, literacy, executive function, personality, psycho-pathology) to clarify how a person presents, and how best to support them. These assessments and reports are available for funding (NDIS, DSP, CTP, PLD, SIRA, PI), career and self-development, identifying support needs, and offering an independent second opinion and case review, including child, adolescent and family assessments for child protection and custody matters; and medicolegal reports.

Research, Specialist Experience & Professional Background

Over the course of my career, I have worked across educational, clinical, occupational and forensic psychology settings in both the UK and Australia. The following highlights some of the specialist services, research collaborations and clinical programs I have been involved in throughout my professional journey.

Educational Psychology and Neurodevelopmental Conditions

Specific Learning Disabilities, Dyslexia and ADHD

At the Dyslexia Research Clinic in collaboration with the University of Oxford and Royal Berkshire Hospital's Orthoptic Department, I worked with Dr John Stein and Dr Sue Fowler where we researched the low level visual and auditory processing skills as they vary across primary school children and within Dyslexic and ADHD children requiring orthoptic assessment and intervention.   As part of this, I examined the effects of coloured filters on low level visual processing in children with Dyslexia who report visual unusual visual distortions while reading, such as letter jiggling or moving when they try to read.

I worked with
Dr Alex Richardson of FAB research to see what the impact of omega-3 and omaga-6 supplementation is on the low level visual processing, reading and writing of ADHD children and adults.

Occupational Psychology

As a business psychologist I focussed on improving workplace performance, leadership capabilities, and employee engagement, Conducting Psychometric Assessments to measure cognitive abilities, personality, and motivations; Delivering 360-Degree Feedback; providing Executive Coaching, help them navigate change, improve strategy, and resolve conflicts; Role profiling and recruitment.

Forensic Psychology Experience

Natural Justice, Cumbria

I worked at Natural Justice, Cumbria alongside Dr Bernard Gesch examining how good nutrition (supplementing with omega-3, omega-6, full range minerals and vitamins) can have a remarkably positive effect on the behaviour of juvenile offenders at HM Young Offenders Unit Aylesbury.

Rampton Secure Hospital – The Peaks Unit

I worked at The Peaks Unit, Rampton Secure Hospital, a high-security psychiatric facility in the UK that historically operated specialised units for Dangerous and Severe Personality Disorder (DSPD). The  classification ‘DSPD’ was a specialised administrative and clinical category used to manage and treat high-risk individuals who presented an imminent threat of violence but did not fit the traditional legal definitions of a "treatable mental illness”.

The DSPD service at Rampton, housed in specialized facilities like The Peaks Unit, catered to individuals presenting severe antisocial, borderline, narcissistic, and paranoid traits. Characteristics of patients in this program included

  • Severe recidivism risk
  • Co-occurring psychopathy.
  • Previous incarceration within Category A and B prison systems.

Interventions I delivered included:

  • An adapted format of Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), adapted from the standard outpatient DBT model to individuals detained in a high-secure environment.
  • Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (TF-CBT) to support trauma psychoeducation, emotional regulation, safer coping, and the processing of traumatic experiences, as patients presented with complex trauma histories arising from adverse childhood experiences, interpersonal violence, neglect, institutionalisation, imprisonment, loss, and other significant life events;
  • The Reinforce Appropriate, Implode Destructive (RAID) which served as the primary positive behavioural reinforcement framework.
  • Stop & Think is a cognitive-behavioral, social problem-solving therapy (McMurran 2001) Helps overcome impulsive, destructive behaviors by guiding them through structured, step-by-step decision making.

Brain Injury and Intellectual Disabilities

Neurology and Brain Injury Service

At the Neurology and Brain Injury Service of the Leeds and York Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, I provided:

  • Comprehensive neuropsychological assessments
  • Cognitive rehabilitation
  • Psychological interventions to support adults experiencing the psychological and behavioural effects of brain injury

Assessment services for cognitive and neuropsychological functioning arising from brain injury can be discussed on an individual basis.

Community Learning Disability Team

I provided:

  • Psychotherapy adapted to the needs of individuals with intellectual disabilities
  • Positive behavioural support for individuals displaying challenging behaviour
  • Precise, nuanced capacity assessments tailored to specific functional areas, promoting least restrictive practices  to maximise individual autonomy, in accordance with the Mental Health Act and Mental Capacity Act for the English and Welsh Court of Protection, equivalent to the NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal (NCAT).

I was also Project Lead for Outcome Measures, designing treatment outcome measures and collecting and reporting service efficacy data for clients with intellectual disabilities.

Domestic Violence

I volunteered with Berkshire Women's Aid, providing therapeutic and psychological support to women escaping domestic violence.

This involved supporting clients through the entire process, from planning to leave, through refuge accommodation, and into rebuilding and resettling their lives.

Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation

As a founding director of Community Action Development, I provided psychotherapy to clients returning to the community following inpatient drug and alcohol treatment.

The organisation has since evolved into Oxford Community Action (OCA).
